About Artist:
My name is Aalaa Akhthar Mohamed, and I am eleven years old. I was born in the Maldives, but two years ago, my family and I moved to Malaysia to continue our studies. I enjoy reading in my spare time because it helps me broaden my horizons and experience new things from the comfort of my room. I also love coding it allows me to create anything I imagine. Of all my hobbies, playing games is my favourite, as it inspires me to develop apps like the ones I enjoy playing.
Artist Statement:
Malaysia is a country rich in diverse cultures and traditions. The people inspire me because they are unique in every way. The vibrant colours and positivity are contagious. The architecture in Malaysia stands out for its beautiful design and semi-modern infrastructure.
I wanted the colours to shine through my painting so that when people look at it, they think, “Malaysia is a country unlike any I’ve ever seen,” rather than view it as an ordinary place. The clear blue skies reminded me of my home country, and I wanted to express that emotion through my painting. I poured my heart and soul into every stroke, hoping to honour Malaysian culture and heritage. While painting, I could almost smell the fresh sea breeze, even though I wasn’t there. It gave me a sense of peace and calm that I seldom feel amid the hustle and bustle of the city.
