Hustle bustle at Jhal bazaar before Eid

Hadia Zia

Description :

This piece is inspired by the famous Jhal bazaar of Faisalabad where you can get anything, from Fabric and shoes to fake designer purses, and get fabric dyed for a third of the price. I began on this a month ago starting with the shops, made from shoe boxes and later painted with acrylic paint. The human figures are all made with air-dry clay and then painted with acrylic paint followed by a clear gloss varnish. All the figures required a week from sculpting to painting and then glazing. The samosas are also made of clay and follow the same process. This model shows all the staple shops that you can find in almost any part of the bazaar. The purse shop on the right is closed because the shops never open at the same time and most of the time shops are closed because of a wedding or a funeral. Next to it is the shoe store where a woman is looking at some flip-flops while her son just wants something to eat. Then we have a woman in the fabric shop trying to find the perfect fabric to go with her outfit and a hopeful salesman showing her everything. Next, we of course have a samosa shop because no bazaar is ever complete without one. Once you come shopping, you’re going to be here for at least three hours. Lastly, we have the dyer’s shop with the owner dying some fabric given to him by another customer who needs a very specific shade of dye. Eid shopping would never be complete without a visit to Jhal.
