curiosity

Description :

Conceptual Art is what I mostly make and am greatly inspired by it. I shot a 30-minute video of a bazaar in Islamabad, converted it into an mp3 file and then used a code that converted it into audio visualised form. The circles in line are representing a certain range of frequency. The bigger the circle, the louder the bazaar was at that particular spot. The image on the right side of this art piece was made from an online source that stacked the frames of the video one after another which gave it sort of a barcode look. The image on the left is the average colour of each frame taken and stacked on each other which now forms a barcode. The most frequently shown colours were then added to the circles. This way, we can directly see which part of the bazaar was how loud, at what location. My inspiration for this art piece was taken by visually impaired people. Their understanding of visuals is through touch or sound. I particularly focused on the sound here. To be able to make sense out of something you can only hear, to only be able to estimate when in a bazaar what the bazaar could look like based on how loud it got, curiosity filling their minds. I aim for this art piece to turn the table onto us and make us imagine what any place we go to (in this scenario the bazaar) would sound like only by using our visual capabilities. It places us in a vulnerable spot as we aim to guess what sounds we’re supposed to ‘hear’ but we only use one of our senses to guess. This provokes curiosity the mind needs to think of the world more than just what is seen.
