“Sappho”

It was first created using normal paper, and graphite, which created a simplistic black portrait of a woman. What I did after was that I added acrylic, using water in an attempt to imitate a bold form of watercolour, adding bright red highlights to emphasise the darker areas and then bright yellow to highlight the lighter areas. I then added more light colours of markers to the black of the clothing (the hat and the jacket) to add more depth to the piece and to add another pop of colour. I also added a neon lining around the girl drawn, which added more emphasis to the girl while also highlighting the yellow in the girl. Then I also added a bright background, which while eye-catching is in colour blocks and is therefore not taking too much attention away from the main part of the artwork. This girl was made to imitate more western ideals, more prominently the idea of New York, with the bright neon colours. Including the style of clothing and hair used. I made it as a homage to my sister, living in New York at the moment, and also to show another way of living which I am not personally accustomed to, through my artwork.
